LD02:  Safe & Circular: Rethinking Materials (Pre-conference Workshop)

Presenters:  Thijs Maartens,Matteo Kaush,Vicki Lockhart,Richard Boyd,Tristan Roberts

Room:  Matterhorn 2, Movenpick Hotel

Join us at a half day workshop to explore the issue of material health at multiple scales—from the chemistry, to the products and buildings they make up and be a collaborator in creating tangible next steps to accelerate transformation of the materials market. Through the lens of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program, this session will provide a framework for selecting ingredients that are safe for humans and the environment and therefore prime for perpetually cycling in a circular economy. Attendees will be challenged to think about materials choices in their own work, and how they can use the LEED v4 BD+C, ID+C, and WELL rating systems to guide clients towards optimized product and a safe and circular future. Discussion and interactive exercises will be centered around how each stakeholder has the ability individually, and as part of the greater ecosystem, to create change.

B01: Healthy, living, transparent. The quiet revolution of materials

Room:  Zurich 1, Movenpick Hotel

Presenters: Carlo Battisti Jane Abernethy Xavier Ramon

In this coming of age story of the building product transparency movement, manufacturers and project teams began an evolutionary growth to cultivate technical knowledge and generate new products and tools for communicating product ingredients, health and environmental impacts. Through an alignment between LEED v4, the WELL Building Standard and Living Building Challenge around what constitutes a sustainable, healthy material, and as the rapid proliferation of transparency programs such as Declare and the Living Product Challenge began to take hold in the industry, a clear market signal was sent to the industry: Welcome to the Healthy Transparent Materials Era. This new economy is making the achievement of the materials requirements and the creation of healthier spaces not only a possibility, but also an accepted standard practice for many organizations and project types.

C02: Aligning Integrative Design, Change Management & Wellbeing

Room:  Zurich 2, Movenpick Hotel

Presenters: Valeria PeredoPatrizia Laplana (WELL AP, WELL Faculty), Lola Ripollés

A LEED or WELL project, implemented rigorously and complemented with a strong and solid change management plan influences both, integrative design and end user acceptance of the changes and consequently their lifestyle and choices. However, you will need to build a change management strategy in advance, considering that people make the change, not organizations, or projects. The goal of aligning this integrative design with change management is to place people first so the impact of thoughtful design on their lifestyle nurtures their wellbeing whilst inspiring their performance. Only in this manner, will we achieve the sought-after talent retention by providing a workplace setting that adapts to the individual´s aspirations and can also transmit the message that the employer cares. The following WELL Building Standard v1 Features will be covered: Health & Wellness Awareness, Integrative Design and Post Occupancy Survey.

F02: Synergies between Green, Wellness and High Energy Efficiency Systems

Room:  Zurich 2, Movenpick Hotel

Presenters: Anne Vogt

We will present two case studies from Spain demonstrating how the dual certifications where key to the success of the project to obtain the most optimized results. Regulations on net-zero energy buildings and Indoor Environmental Quality, among other areas, make it imperative to combine different strategies which can be taken from combining different certification systems like LEED with WELL and BREEAM with Passivhaus. We will show with real case studies one in process and one completed how this is achieved. The first Case Study will be a BREEAM Home with Passivhaus that achieved a high rating and was the first project in Spain to be invited to the BREEAM International Awards in 2016. The second Case Study will be the Headquarters of a large corporation in Spain currently undergoing LEED BD+C with WELL NEB.

G01: Cross matching LEED, WELL and Smart building criteria: Project cases

Room:  Zurich 1, Movenpick Hotel

Presenters: Peter Buurman Ana Cunha Cribellier Bastiaan Beerens Daniel Martin

Buildings are not just expected to be high energy performing; they are increasingly expected to be resource-efficient, to be zero-energy, but also to be people-centric designed, in order to be comfortable, healthy and support user's well-being. In practice, engineers are requested to have integrated design skills and global performance skills in order to currently design buildings that comply with LEED (and/or BREEAM) certification, achieve high WELL standards and that favor user experience with technology that allow the asset to be an assistant of building users. This session will: highlight key challenges and stakes of designing Sustainable, Healthy and Smart Buildings - showcase real building examples that cross-match several certifications, being LEED, BREEAM and WELL; mention some of the first Dutch projects pursuing WELL; provide insight of technical strategies and solutions to succeed synergies as connected and complementary as sustainability for both our planet and for people everywhere.

14:30 - 15:30

H01: The ecosystem of Healthy Materials for a Circular Built Environment

Room: Zurich 1, Movenpick Hotel

Presenters: Pablo van den BoschOlivia FinchEdwin Van NoortThijs Maartens

In this session we will focus on how verified safe circular inputs play an important role in multiple frameworks and tools that can help guide your decision making to realize your circular and material health goals for your building project. Creating a circular economy in which buildings function as material banks begins with choosing – and integrating – safe, healthy products and materials into every project. But what opportunities and barriers exist into making smart material choices to realize circular building projects.
